What’s a Mastermind? Information Session

What’s a mastermind?

A Mastermind is a group of people who get together on a regular basis to talk about their professional goals, get advice from each other, share resources, celebrate wins, and keep each other accountable for what they said they would do.

A mastermind helps you and your mastermind group members achieve success faster than you could on your own.

Who is it for?

Anyone can be in a mastermind. You can be in a mastermind. If you want to make a difference in the world, if you want to achieve powerful goals, if you are driven to succeed, if you want to sharpen your skills, if you want genuine feedback, you will find all that and more in a mastermind.

“The group requires commitment, confidentiality, willingness to both give and receive advice and ideas, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion. Mastermind group members act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates and supportive colleagues. This is the essence and value of mastermind groups.”

My Personal Experience

My name is Evelyn, and I am a staff member in the DLC. I have been in a mastermind for 2.5 years. I started it with a friend, as we were both interested in building up our entrepreneurial businesses. My mastermind currently has four members, and we have met once a week online ever since. You can read more about the inception of our mastermind on my personal blog here: http://travelingev.com/2015/05/how-to-be-in-a-mastermind/.

Why Have a MIIS Mastermind?

You gain clarity over your priorities and get more done, because you have made a commitment to your team and you have a deadline every week—your mastermind meeting. It’s life-changing, to have a group of people so involved in your weekly accountability.

With the support of Desmond, one of my graduate assistants, we wanted to bring the concept to MIIS and offer it to our students here.

In graduate school, there are a lot of things competing for your time and attention, and sometimes it’s hard to remember to look up and see what you’re really aiming for. A mastermind will help you focus on what’s really important to you. You’ll have the opportunity to share your vision of success for the future. Then each week you can share what’s going well in your life, which can be an inspiration to others. You’ll also have the opportunity to talk about what you’re struggling with professionally, and receive feedback and advice from your peers. Then you’ll commit to your goals for the upcoming week, and your mastermind members will be there to help you see if they are in line with your overall vision, and if you are challenging yourself enough (or too much!).

“In a mastermind group, the agenda belongs to the group and each person’s participation and commitment is key. Your mastermind partners give you feedback, help you brainstorm new possibilities, and set up accountability structures that keep you focused and on track. You create a community of supportive colleagues who brainstorm together to move the members to new heights. You’ll gain tremendous insights which improve your business and personal life. Your mastermind group is like having a objective board of directors, a success team, and a peer advisory group, all rolled into one.”
